Android-powered smartphones already got this feature in March. besides, Ios will get the feature soon as well.
According to Facebook, the feature is helpful in Avoiding Scams and Imposters along with helping minors stay safe on Facebook. Facebook’s new feature educates people under 18 to be cautious when interacting with an adult they may not know. It also empowers them to take action before responding to a message.
“Too often people interact with someone online they think they know or trust when it’s really a scammer or imposter. These accounts can be hard to identify at first and the results can be costly” Said Jay Sullivan, Director of Product Management, Messenger Privacy, and Safety. Messenger already provides tips and filters potential spam and malware to avoid scams.
Facebook Messenger is also working on end-to-end encryption. Alongside, the company is investing greatly in privacy-preserving tools like this to keep people secure without reading the message content. In Addition, the company revealed that these safety measures were obtained with deep machine learning. It looks at behavioral signals like an adult sending a large number of friends/message requests to people under 18. This ensures that the new features will be available and effective when Messenger is end-to-end encrypted.
