Microsoft has been creating worthy tablet PCs since 2012 on its Surface lineup. In that lineup, the latest is released on July 10, 2018. It is the new Microsoft Surface Go PC tablet with a 10-inch touch display and Windows 10. Finally, after so many days, it is arriving in India on December 27th which will be available on Flipkart.
The predecessor of this device is Microsoft Surface 3 which had an 8-inch display, 2GB RAM and 1.6 GHz Atom Z8700 processor. This last gen tablet was kinda like a smartphone with a large screen, but it had Windows 8.1 out of the box.
The all-new Surface GO has pretty decent specs compared to its predecessor.
It is powered by Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor which is like “ not too bad and not too great” thing. Just like some of the recent smartphones, this device too comes in two variants of 4GB and 8GB RAM and obviously on different prices.
It has a round edge display with pretty decent ergonomics. It comes with Windows 10 with S mode on out of the box. Apart from this machine has a lot to cover.
Microsoft Pen and Type cover (Keyboard):
This new tablet is compatible with Microsoft Pen which costs around $100 (approx ₹7000). The Microsoft Pen works very well with the Surface Go just like how it does with other Surface devices like Surface Book, Surface Studio and Surface Hub. The pressure detection is pretty accurate on this device.
The Microsoft Surface Go is also compatible with Type covers which makes this tablet into a fully functioning laptop. It has both keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard is a bit slaggier than most of the lower end laptops. The trackpad has got the standard Microsoft quality. But many reviewers complain that the trackpad is a bit smaller. It would have been great if it is slightly bigger. This Type cover is made up of soft Alcantara fabric which comes in three colours (Burgundy, Cobalt and Platinum).
Camera and Audio:
We saw many people praising the front-facing camera in many online forums. Also, many reviewers are making a statement that this camera is the best front-facing camera than any other laptop cameras. It has got an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel camera on the front.
This device has two front firing speakers with Dolby Audio Premium sound. It fits and works perfectly for its design. The stereo effect on these speakers works perfectly fine while watching movies on Netflix.
Gaming & Battery Life:
Actually, this device is primarily designed for office use. So obviously this is not for hardcore gamers. But when the device is on the S mode, the games on the Microsoft store works better with the Intel integrated graphics 615. They ran very clean and smooth. But if you ask can we play other heavyweight games from steam? The answer is No. And also it is a big NO for Fornite.
Microsoft says that this device can last up to 9 hours, but we recommend not to expect that much. This tablet can last only up to 5-6 hours.
The S mode:
So this is where things get a little uncomfortable. The new Microsoft Surface Go comes with S mode switched on out of the box. The S mode does not allow you to download or use any third party apps other than the apps in the Microsoft store. The only browser you can access is Microsoft Edge. These restrictions are very uncomfortable as they are not that user-friendly as other applications. Fortunately, we can turn it off in the settings but it does have an impact on battery performance.
Microsoft Surface Go has one USB-C port, a headphone jack and a microSD card reader. Unfortunately, the USB-C port is not Thunderbolt 3 compatible.
Stay tuned for more updates.
