“Remove China Apps” has been removed from Google Play Store by Google. Developers say it wasn’t aimed to “promote or force people to uninstall any of the applications”
What is Remove China Apps?
Remove China Apps is an App developed by Jaipur based OneTouch AppLabs. It helps users to know about the Chinese Apps installed on their mobiles and helps them uninstall it. The app scans the apps installed on the users’ device and identifies their country of origin. If the country of origin is found to be China, the app notifies the user and gives them an option to uninstall the apps.
The app is pretty simple and straightforward to use. When a user clicks on ‘Scan’ it will either congratulate you for having no Chinese apps installed on your device. Or, It will show you list of Chinese origin apps installed on your phone – such as TikTok.
Popularity on Social Media Platforms
Remove China Apps has been trending since the last few weeks in India owing to the raging ‘Anti China Sentiment’ developing in the country. The app removes all applications having Chinese origin. Remove China Apps received massive positive response and reviews from the Indian community on play store. It had an average rating of 4.5 stars from nearly 180,000 reviews. It also earned a huge number of downloads (50 lakhs) just after trending on social media platforms.
Soon, an enormous number of people started using the app and began sharing screenshots of the app on every social media platform. One thing led to another and soon enough large number of people were using the app and uninstalling Chinese apps from their smartphones. The app obtained 1 million downloads in just 10 days since its launch.
Although, most of the downloads were from India, users from Australia also started to download the App. It had reached the No. 5 spot in the Android Tools Section.
The app came into the limelight just as the ‘Anti China Sentiment” was at its peak due to the Corona virus and India-China Border Disputes.
Removal From The Google Play Store
Remove china Apps has been suspended google play store. According to Google, the app violates Google’s deceptive behavior rules. As per the deceptive behavior rules, an app cannot encourage users to remove third-party apps. As Remove China Apps was designed to help users uninstall Chinese origin apps from their smartphones, it was suspended.
The developer of Remove China Apps confirmed the suspension by making a tweet late night on Tuesday. It said “Google has suspended our #RemoveChinaApps from google play store. Thank you all for your support in the past 2 weeks. “You Are Awesome”
The developer company claims on its website that while numerous people were using the app to remove the Chinese origin apps from their phone, it wasn’t aimed to ” promote or force people to uninstall any of the application(s) and developed for educational purposes only “
Google has confirmed that it suspended the app sue to deceptive behavior policy which does not allow apps that “encourages or incentivize users into removing or disabling third-party apps” and “mislead users into removing or disabling third-party apps”.
This is the second high profile app to be removed from google play store within this week. Before Remove China Apps, Mitron- an Indian alternative to TikTok was also removed from Play Store. The app was violating play store policies and was removed after surging past 50 lakh downloads. Similar to Remove China Apps, Mitron App also gained popularity owing to Anti-China Sentiment.
