Earlier today Samsung launched new successor Samsung Galaxy A7(2018) of its mid-range A-series smartphones in Delhi. This phone is flooded with loads of cool new features. One of the eye-catching things about the device is its camera setup. It uplifts the look of the phone.

The question is, Is this a smartphone worth buying? Let’s segregate its feature and look into their pros and cons briefly.

Quick spec:

It has got

  • 6 inch Super AMOLED display with 411 ppi
  • Octa-core 2.2GHz Exynos 7 Octa 7885 chipset.
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB as one variant 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage as another one.
  • 24+8+5 megapixel cameras with Autofocus, Ultra wide angle and Depth sensing sensors respectively
  • 3300 mAh battery
  • 3D glass body
  • It has a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Protection.
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • It is priced at INR 23990 for 4GB RAM variant and INR 28990 for 6GB RAM variant.

Camera:

As we saw earlier it has got the massive Triple Camera setup with Ultra Wide Angle lens on one of them. The primary camera holds a 24-megapixel Autofocus Sensor with an aperture of f/1.7, 8-megapixel Ultra Wide Angle lens with f/2.4 aperture and 5-megapixel Depth sensing sensor with f/2.2 aperture.

The secondary camera holds a 24 megapixel fixed focus sensor camera with an aperture of f/2.0. It also has some cool features like Selfie Focus, Pro Lighting mode etc.

The only disappointment with the primary camera is, there is no telephoto lens this time . But with the triple camera setup, I hope portraits will come out well. It’s said that the camera would perform very well in low light condition.

This is the first smartphone to get triple camera setup among the mid-range smartphones.

Processor:

This smartphone has Samsung’s own Exynos 7000 series processor. The Exynos 7885 will be somewhat like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 processor which is pretty decent in this price range.

What can you expect from a mid-range smartphone more than this?

But there is Xiaomi’s Poco F1 in the market holding Snapdragon 845 which is much more advanced and better and also it costs less than this.

Power users and game lovers will definitely go for Poco F1 than choosing this. Samsung could’ve considered competing Poco. let’s wait for Samsung’s next move.

The Extras:

No company in the smartphone industry could ever surprise us with some awesome extra features like Samsung does.

3D Glass Body:

Samsung Galaxy A7(2018) comes out unique 3D Glass Body which would perform very well with cellular signal.

BUT. Why a glass body phone without wireless charging ability?

Most of Samsung’s flagships are bodied with Glass just because they can support wireless charging. But it’s just a show-off thing owning a mid-range smartphone with a glass body. Samsung says it feels premium in hand. What do you think?…

Side mounted Fingerprint Scanner:

Side mounted fingerprint scaner

We have to appreciate Samsung’s effort on setting up Fingerprint scanner in the most comfortable place to unlock the phone.

We have seen this feature before on some Sony phones. The difference is Sony phones used passive scanner but Samsung preferred to go with a Active scanner. It means, in Sony phones you need to touch and press the key to unlock. With the Samsung phone you just touch the scanner to unlock. You need to get use to it.

To turn off the display you just need to long press the scanner. Again you need to use to it. There also chance of turning off the display accidentally. Hope Samsung solve it with the update.

Samsung has taken effort for this midrage to give this new feature without any bug really. It also unlocks like other Samsung’s fingerprint scanner in terms of speed.

Dolby Atmos Audio support:

This feature is not a common thing you could find out in any other Mid-range smartphones. This phone holds Dolby Atmos Stereo speakers. It helps the user to experience improved sound quality.

AR Emoji:

Just like Apple’s Animoji Samsung has also introduced Samsung’s AR emoji in their past flagships.

It scans the user’s face and converts it into real-time emoji using Augmented Reality(AR). You can save you AR Emoji as gif file and share it with your friends.

Who will use instagram filters anymore?

User Interface (UI):

This is where everything gets a bit disappointing. As always A7 (2018) got applied Samsung’s own Skin called Samsung experience 9 on top of Android 8.0 (Oreo) .

Samsung has also promised its users that this device will receive Android 9.0 (Pie) update. The thing is, as Samsung is using its own skin the regular security update can be expected, but the Android OS Updates take time to rolled out for this device.

Hope Samsung will give Samsung’s experience 9.5 or 10 as it will be a big jump from experience 9.

Verdict: The Samsung Galaxy A7 is a stylish smartphone enabling you to capture awesome pictures with its beasty triple camera setup. If you are going camping or trekking, this phone will help you to take breathtaking pictures with its Ultra wide angle sensor. It is a mediocre smartphone on its price and there is no way to accept this phone as a competition for other smartphones in this price range like Poco f1.
