Samsung has revealed its new Exynos 880 SoC (System on Chip). The SoC is also capable of 5G. In addition, It has already found a customer! Vivo’s Y70s will be the first smartphone to use Exynos 880 SoC.
What is an SoC?
SoC stands for System on a Chip. This chip does all the computing. SoC is the brain of the Smartphone. It isn’t just a processor alone, It has numerous processing parts integrated into it. These modules are – Processor, GPU, System Memory, Wi-Fi, LTE (connectivity modules), Audio Processing Units, Image Processing Unit, Video Encoders, and many more modules integrated into a compact single chip. The SoC is soldered on the Circuit board. Some of the major competitors in the SoC market are – Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung Semiconductors.
Samsung’s New Exynos 880 SoC: All About It
Samsung – The South Korean Tech Giant has revealed its new Exynos 880 SoC with 5G capabilities. It is supposed to be powering future Mid-range smartphones.
The Exynos 880 SoC sports a 2.0 GHz Dual-core Cortex-A77 along with 1.8 GHz Hexa-core Cortex-A55 ( 2x A77 + 6x A55 = Octacore Processor). It is bundled with a Mali-G76 MP5 GPU with integrated NPU for machine learning. The SoC runs on the latest 8nm FinFET design.
Exynos 880 SoC can support a single camera up to 64MP or 20MP + 20MP Dual-camera. furthermore, in terms of Video, it boasts up to 4K UHD (30 FPS) encoding capabilities along with HEVC(H.265), H.264, VP9 decoding.
Samsung’s newly launched SoC offers 6GHz next-generation 5G support. It is able to achieve upload speed of 1.28Gbps, and a download speed of 2.55Gbps that can be lifted to 3.55Gpbs with E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity that combines 5G and LTE capabilities. The chip is compatible with a broad range of networks from 2G to 5G.
Exynos 880 SoC is compatible with LPDDR4x RAM, UFS 2.1 along with eMMC 5.1 storage. FULL HD+(2520 x 1080 pixels) display support is a big plus as well. Besides, the chipset supports Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi (802.11ac) with support for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo as well.
There are speculations of Samsung Exynos 880 SoC being a downgraded version of Samsung’s Exynos 980 SoC. The features are fairly similar with some little tweaks.
Vivo Y70s First To Use Samsung Exynos 880 SoC.
Vivo Y70s is the first smartphone to use the Xynos 880 SoC. The smartphone is launched in China. Vivo Y70s will go on sale on June 1.
