Android System WebView

WebView on Android versions

Android system webview comes as a pre-installed app in the lower versions of the android system. In Android 4.4 KitKat web view was changed to make it user friendly from the jelly bean version. An android KitKat chrome-based webview similar to the chrome browser. After android version 5.0 was released when the android web view changed into a separate type in the play store. 

The WebView component is based on the Chromium open-source project. The latest WebViews includes V8 JavaScript engine and support for modern web standards which was missing in the old WebViews. New WebViews also share the same rendering engine as Chrome for android so rendering should be much more consistent between the WebView and Chrome. 

Since Android 5.0 (Lollipop), the WebView has moved to an APK. So it can be updated separately to the Android platform. 

To check your current Chrome version  (on a Lollipop or later device), go to settings< Apps< Android System WebView and look at the version.

Android L Developer and WebView

The WebView is based on the same code as Chrome for Android version 30. This WebView does not have full feature parity with Chrome for Android and is given the version number 30.0.0.0.

Note: You cannot publish apps using the L Developer preview to the Google Play Store. 

How to update WebView?

The WebView in the Android L can be updated through the Play Store, so you need to check the latest version on the device under App Settings.

The WebView will auto-update for mobile devices with Android L and above. For further proofing your app you can use the beta WebView to test versions of WebView before it’s launched.
